I fail absolutely in every effort to believe that it's permissible for anyone to say that building an Islam-focused religious community center near the WTC site -- or anywhere -- is offensive. I don't care how famous or influential the people saying it are. This isn't a side that the media needs to represent in order to be fair. Neither bigotry nor the ignorance on which it depends are positions; they're at best occasions for shame and for shaming.
This isn't the America I grew up in.
